TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – The has been extinguished, according to Fairview Fire Department Chief Justin Bohlmann. The fire, which began in a shuttered building and spread to two others at the site on Wednesday, took several fire departments and thousands of gallons of water to extinguish.
The Fairview Fire Department arrived at the sprawling complex, which has been closed since 2012, shortly after 11 a.m. and found a fire in two buildings before it rapidly spread to a third structure. Many of the buildings date back to the mid to late 1800s and are considered by first responders to be “tinder boxes”.
The Fairview Fire Department issued an advisory on Friday, saying, “Over the next several days, residents will continue to see smoke coming from the HRPC site in the area of the recent fire incident. At this time, the fire is 100 percent contained. Fairview Fire District units and personnel are clear of the scene.”
Chief Bohlmann noted that his personnel will patrol and monitor the area in the event of “hot spots” that may rekindle and create new problems. “If you observe smoke conditions that concern you, please do not hesitate to call 911,” the chief said.
Chief Bohlmann also advised that the site is private property and trespassing is prohibited, and encouraged those who are curious about the fire to stay away from the site due to unstable conditions and hidden hazards
