MONTICELLO – The Village of Monticello has joined the growing list of area communities that have adopted good cause eviction legislation that prevents landlords from tenant evictions without good reason.
The new law seeks to afford tenants the most protection under the law to prevent unjust eviction from their homes.
“We have to address affordable housing with all the means we can,” said Mayor Rochelle Massey. “Certainly, increasing the stock of housing which our resident can afford is critical, but so is ensuring that those who have long resided here are not priced out of their dwelling units.”
The law takes effect immediately.
The village board, Tuesday, also adopted a clean air act in response to the prospect of a major incinerator being placed on or near the village.
The local law requires operators of polluting facilities to measure and report in real time the emissions from their operations and limits those emissions in such a manner as to require that only the most efficient and safe units may be built.
“Protecting public health is our central priority,” said the mayor. “This is accomplished not just by operating a strong police department, but by ensuring that our residents are protected from new sources of air pollution. Our trustees join me in wanting to require state-of-the-art technology which provides transparency with regard to air pollution release and limits those to safe levels.”
