KINGSTON – Ulster County lawmakers want to enact a local law prohibiting police officers from covering their faces when dealing with the public, but the Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee held off on taking action on it Tuesday.

Deputy County Executive Jamie Capuano noted the state legislature has taken up the issue as well.

“The state legislature, through the budget process made changes and they will be adopting a state law that’s requiring this. So, we are doing a legal evaluation comparing the proposed local law to the state law to determine if there are any changes that need to be made to be in accordance with state law. So, we will be coming back once we deal with that evaluation,” she said.

The issue became one of major national controversy as masked ICE agents across the country scooped up people and in two Minnesota cases, shot and killed two civilians.
