KINGSTON – An Albany-based Battery Electric Storage System (BESS) company wants to develop a facility on Ulster County property in the Town of New Paltz, and the environmental review process is in the early stages in the county legislature.
The system, proposed by , would be situated on land at Paradies Lane where the county is constructing its new 911 center.
Safety with regard to development and siting those types of operations being a major concern, company Sr. Director of Development Colin Loveless told the Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee of the county legislature on Tuesday that review will be lengthy and extensive.
“One of the key things would be the development of an emergency response plan with the fire department collaboratively before the project is ultimately constructed and operating,” he said. “And also, there is the opportunity for third party expert review on the other side of the permitting process for subject matter experts to opine and ensure that their resources for reviewing the project to make sure it is done safely and properly.”
Anywhere those projects are proposed, there are concerns about lithium-ion battery fires. Last year there was a serious fire at a BESS plan in the Orange County Town of Warwick.
