MID-HUDSON – The $3 per gallon sales tax cap on gas went into effect in participating counties on Monday, June 1.

The counties of Dutchess, Rockland, and Ulster instituted the cap in an effort to countermand the effects of the dramatic rise in prices at the pump after President Trump attacked Iran, and the Strait of Hormuz was shut down by the Iranians.

Putnam County, which also planned to cap sales tax, had to postpone its implementation until September 1 because of a mailing error.

In Ulster County, Legislator Laura Donovan of Marlborough introduced the measure, and she said the savings per fill-up “may not be substantial (but) every little bit helps at a time when the cost of most goods and services continues to rise.”

They said the “real impact is that Ulster County motorists are expected to save an estimated $725,000 over the summer driving months.”
