KINGSTON – The Hudson Valley Tenants Union has launched its effort to build tenant power throughout the region.
Lead organizer June Nemon has been pushing for tenants’ rights since Kingston started with its declaration of a housing emergency in 2022.
“We are living in a really severe housing crisis. That has been true for a long time. It’s also true that the Hudson Valley has played a real leadership role and taking action about the housing crisis. There are over a dozen municipalities in our area that have opted into good cause eviction, which protects against retaliation and no cause evictions and guaranteed lease renewals,” Nemon said.
Sumathy Kumar, director of the New York State Tenants Bloc, said, “Tenants across New York are getting organized because we have had enough of rent hikes that pad our landlords’ pockets instead of fixing our homes.”
