On day 19 we crossed the Indiana state line into Ohio in the middle of the afternoon, the tires humming a steady rhythm as the Indiana Toll Road transitioned directly into the Ohio Turnpike.
For the first stretch, flat cornfields and acres of farmland lined both sides of the highway, stretching out to the horizon under a hazy sky. As we bypassed Toledo, the traffic grew heavier with freight trucks, and the air turned noticeably humid from Lake Erie. We crossed over several wide, slow-moving rivers, maintaining a steady cruising speed on the concrete toll road. We took the split for Interstate 90 East and left the turnpike system behind. The wide-open agricultural plains quickly gave way to the wooded, greener landscape of the Cleveland suburbs.
Within a few miles, we took an exit and pulled off the highway, navigating the quieter local roads into Avon and the hotel just as the evening shadows started to stretch across the lawns.
