Haverstraw PD investigates off-duty NYPD cop firing gun

HAVERSTRAW – The Haverstraw Police Department along with the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office are investigating why an off-duty member of the New York City Police Department fired one round from his legally owned gun on Sunday, May 24.

Local police said the incident took place at around 7:45 p.m. in the parking lot of ShopRite at 56 West Ramapo Road in Garnerville.

Officers encountered two men who sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries during the confrontation and were taken to the hospital, treated and released.

The preliminary investigation revealed that one of the men, the off-duty NYPD officer, had a legally owned handgun and removed it from his waistband, resulting in a round being discharged. No one was struck.

During the investigation, police found the dispute may have stemmed from the other man allegedly harassing the NYPD officer’s daughter. Police said the daughter and the other man involved are acquaintances only and are not, nor have ever been, in any form of domestic relationship.
