Robert Smith

GOSHEN – A 55-year-old Newburgh man was sentenced in Orange County Court on Tuesday to 13 years in state prison after being convicted by a jury of robbery.

It was alleged at trial that on October 12, 2024, at about 1:10 p.m., Robert Smith was riding a bicycle in the City of Newburgh, approached a man and demanded money. When the victim refused and kept walking, Smith got off the bike, punched the victim several times, causing him to fall backwards and strike his head on the pavement.

Smith them went through the man’s pockets, took property and fled.

Prior to the trial, the victim died of unrelated causes. At trial, the case was proven by other witnesses and evidence.

Smith was also sentenced to five years of post-release supervision.

Smith has been in trouble with the law in the past and District Attorney David Hoovler said the “appropriately lengthy sentence imposed on this violence recidivist will help to make our community safer.”
