A natural gas leak in Carmel forced the evacuation of a residence

CARMEL- A natural gas leak inside a residence in Carmel traced to a gas-supplied boiler resulted in a full holiday response from members of the Carmel Fire Department.

Occupants of the attached home called 9-1-1 after hearing a gas detector activate. The family evacuated and when firefighters arrived minutes later, they discovered an extremely high and dangerous gas reading exceeding 1,000 parts per million.

Firefighters ventilated the home, and Central Hudson Gas and Electric Company was called in to resolve the hazard.

Carmel Fire Department Chief Vincent Ruggiero said the “incident serves as an important reminder to have all gas appliances and heating equipment inspected and maintained regularly by qualified professionals.”

The chief added: “If your home uses natural gas appliances, we strongly recommend installing a natural gas detector in the residence. Early detection devices can provide an important warning and help protect residents from a potentially dangerous situation.”

No injuries were reported.
