PUTNAM COUNTY- Sunday’s Memorial Day observances in Carmel and Lake Carmel were both well attended despite pouring rain and chilly temperatures.

The mercury read 47 degrees at Lake Carmel when 65 men and women donning rain gear shivered during the traditional ceremony. An hour later more than 100 packed the Carmel Veterans Hall in the county seat for another long-established gathering.

Putnam’s Director of the Veterans Services Agency Karl Rohde emceed both ceremonies quoting the late General George Patton: “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died; rather we should thank God such men lived.”

Memorial Day ceremonies are scheduled for today in communities across eastern and western Putnam County.
