GOLDENS BRIDGE- A downed utility line sparked a brush fire off Route 22 in Goldens Bridge that spread to the roof of a Mercedes-Benz dealership, prompting a large response from firefighters in northern Westchester and Putnam counties.

As Goldens Bridge firefighters battled the brush fire behind the dealership, they saw smoke rising from the roof of the newly built structure.

Mutual aid was requested, and firefighters from Croton Falls, Somers, Katonah, South Salem, Vista, and Bedford Hills responded. Crews from Putnam backfilled the departments that had been dispatched.

Firefighters had to wait for NYSEG crews to shut off power before they could attack either fire. Fire officials also reported that a backup generator supplying power to air conditioning units on the roof caught fire, creating another power source that had to be isolated before suppression could begin.

Problems were further worsened for fire crews when a transformer on the west side of Interstate 684 also caught fire because of shifted electrical load conditions.

Fire department personnel spent three and one-half hours at the scene and returned to quarters after checking for hot spots on the roof and embers in the brush fire.

There were no reported injuries.
