TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – Forty-one-year-old Michael Ryan was arrested on Tuesday on several felony charges after leading multiple police agencies on a high-speed chase while driving a truck that was stolen from Home Depot, according to Town of Poughkeepsie Police. The lengthy incident began on Innis Avenue at approximately 11:15 a.m. on May 19.
.
Authorities say town police responded to the Shell gas station on Innis Avenue after a report of a rented Home Depot truck stolen from that location. Town police located the truck in the area of Cottage and North Hamilton Streets near the Dutchess County Jail in the City of Poughkeepsie. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver, now identified as Michael Ryan, refused to comply and sped away.
Ryan fled north into Hyde Park and back into the Town of Poughkeepsie, where he struck a fence at Locust Grove on South Road (Route 9), and then raced back into the city. Ryan drove the wrong way on some roads and reached speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour during the pursuit.
Ryan eventually abandoned the truck on Reynolds Avenue, behind Market Fresh, and fled on foot. Officers from multiple police agencies set up a perimeter, and Ryan was eventually located and taken into custody in the area.
The defendant has been charged with the following:
Felony grand larceny
Two felony counts of criminal mischief
Felony reckless endangerment
Misdemeanor fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle
Misdemeanor aggravated unlicensed operation
Ryan was arraigned in the Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail without bail.
The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, Hyde Park Police Department, City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, and New York State Police all assisted the town police during the pursuit and apprehension.
