CARMEL – Putnam’s only hospital, Putnam Hospital Center, will be resembling a war zone today as the medical center in conjunction with the county’s police, fire and EMS personnel will be conducting a day long active shooter exercise.

PHC President Dr. Mark Hirko described training and preparedness as “important roles in helping healthcare teams and first responders respond quickly and effectively during emergencies.”

Visitors to the hospital as well as patients will notice emergency vehicles and personnel throughout the day as teams take part in a series of scenarios.

Agencies taking part include State Police, Putnam Sheriff’s Department, Carmel, Kent, Brewster and Cold Spring Police, Putnam County SPCA Police, Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services, members of fire departments and ambulance corps countywide, as well as various departments associated with county government.

Dr. Hirko thanked the collaboration of the participating agencies in addition to the community for its understanding as “we continue prioritizing safety, readiness, and emergency response planning.”
