LIBERTY – A 29 -year-old Liberty man is in the Sullivan County Jail on high bail while the man he allegedly stabbed is being treated at Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla suffering from “significant” stab wounds to his arm, Police Chief Steven D’Agata said.
The incident at the Knights Inn Motel on Route 55 in the Village of Liberty occurred at around 9:20 a.m. on Tuesday and within a half hour, village police arrested Everrod Mais in another room at the hotel.
Mais was identified as the suspect after police reviewed security video footage.
He was arraigned and charged with criminal possession of a weapon and assault, both as felonies, and remanded in lieu of $300,000 cash bail, $900,000 bond or $2.5 million partially secured bond.
The chief said his officers “responded to this incident within three minutes, immediately rendered potentially life-saving aid, identified the suspect, and took him into custody within 30 minutes.”
D’Agata said keeping the community safe will require coordination from all levels of government. “Simply put, the current status quo of utilizing motels to sere our unhoused population is unsafe, unsustainable, and unfair to all involved.”
He said the problem “will not go away on its own, and immediate and meaningful changes are needed.”
