CARMEL – Each May, members of the VFW Auxiliary converge on the Putnam County Legislature and sell buddy poppies to the legislators as well as members in the audience.

For the 55th consecutive year, VFW Auxiliary members Joan Russell and Carol Krauss detailed the importance of the red flowers at the historic Putnam County Courthouse before an overflow crowd.

VFW buddy poppies are assembled by disabled vets with the proceeds used exclusively for the benefit of needy and disabled veterans as well as their widows and children.

When issuing a proclamation, Legislator Laura Russo said the annual sale of the Buddy Poppies was reflected in the desire to “honor the dead by helping the living.”

The lawmaker also urged all residents of the county – from Carmel to Cold Spring – to wear a Buddy Poppy this month as “mute evidence of our gratitude to the men and women of this country who have risked their lives in defense of the freedoms which we enjoy daily.”
