CARMEL- Observed nationwide for decades, the National Day of Prayer traces back to 1775 and was designated an annual observance by Congress in 1952.

For decades, Putnam County observed the National Day of Prayer thanks to the efforts of the late State Supreme Court Judge John Sweeny and the late Mahopac physician Dr. Patrick Delamere.

The pandemic and passing of community leaders resulted in the tradition ending across Putnam.

County Executive Kevin Byrne contacted the Reverend Larry Maxwell of the Patterson Baptist Church and others recently requesting that the prayer vigil be returned allowing residents to pray for world peace, our nation, families, education, businesses and workplaces, first responders, the military, government and the media.

Byrne said the faith healers “answered the call and brought together a diverse group of leaders and residents to pray.”

Carmel’s Cornerstone Park was the scene of the vigil allowing residents to practice the power of prayer.

Sheila Kimball, Regional Director for the National Day of Prayer noted that every county in New York State had registered a community prayer service this year except Putnam County.

Byrne said: “Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved, Putnam helped ensure 100 percent participation across all 62 counties in New York.”
