MONTICELLO- In recognition of Law Day, the Sullivan County Bar Association presented a mock trial to local high school students. This event provided a valuable opportunity for them to experience the county courthouse firsthand and to gain an appreciation of the essential role jurors play in our legal system.
Marty Rutberg was one of the lawyers who participated in the trial.
“There’s a big emphasis on making people understand the importance of the jury system and making young people look on it as a privilege and an opportunity rather than something to be avoided,” he said.
Supreme Court Justice Meagan K. Galligan, a Sullivan County resident and former county District Attorney, talked about how her experience in a mock trial when she was young led her to become a lawyer.
“I got to see the pressure attorneys work under the stakes that were at issue,” she said. “Seeing that I could have an impact on the actual outcome of the case was really eye-opening for me.”
