CARMEL – Today’s youth—tomorrow’s leaders were the theme of the Putnam Youth Bureau’s Senior Recognition Ceremony held during the monthly meeting of the county legislature.

Fifty teenagers converged on the Putnam Office Building where members of the county legislature commended them for their contributions and volunteer work.

When issuing a proclamation detailing May 5 as Putnam County High School Senior Recognition Day, Legislator Toni Addonizio thanked the high school seniors from Brewster, Carmel, Haldane in Cold Spring, Mahopac and Putnam Valley for donating their time to Youth Court, Youth Forum, Youth Board, Teen-N-Kids Mentoring as well as a wide variety of service activities countywide.

Addonizio also called on residents of Putnam to “unite in assisting our youth to achieve their goals while helping them to develop good citizenship.”

The lawmakers also proclaimed May as Global Youth Traffic Safety Month by raising awareness of safety issues associated with teenage driving.

The lawmakers encouraged the teens to “develop and lead traffic safety education projects while supporting law enforcement and promoting legislation that not only protects teen drivers but their passengers as well.”

Legislator Jake D’Angelo cited recent statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: “Young drivers, aged 16 to 19, are three times more likely to be in a fatal car crash than drivers over the age of 20,” he said.
