Jake Rosmarin aboard the troubled vessel

MV HONDIUS at SEA – A Monroe, New York resident, who is a travel influencer, is a passenger aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean where three people have died and another eight took ill from the Hantavirus.

Jake Rosmarin posted a video on social media where he was visibly shaken by the outbreak.

“We are people. People with families with lives. We have people waiting for us at home. There is a lot of uncertainty and that’s the hardest part,” he said. “All we want right now is to feel safe, to have clarity and to get home.”

Rosmarin’s physician is Dr. Raymond Basri of Goshen. He said the virus is transmitted the same as the COVID-19 virus, but with a much longer incubation period of 10 to 40 days.

“If people were exposed to it, they could transmit it without having any symptoms for that period of incubation, but once you show the symptoms, you have to deal with a much more lethal infection, and the incubation period means you need a of time in quarantine, which is difficult to do.”

Basri said there is no vaccine for the disease but there are viral treatments. He said the onset is very abrupt, so when the symptoms come on a lot of the people are going into respiratory failure and cardiac failure, and they are dying very quickly. “The lethality is very high,” the physician said.
