HIGHLAND – RUPCO cut the ribbon Wednesday on Silver Gardens, a $22.1 million complex with 57 one-room apartments for those 62 and older alongside the wooded bluff of Franny Reese State Park.

“It’s been a great partnership between ourselves, RUPCO, and Richard Gerentine and his company,” said Kevin O’Connor, RUPCO CEO.

“We have such an aging tsunami of people coming,” said O’Connor. “I like to remind people that women are outliving men. Women do not earn what men earn. They don’t have the same retirement. This is the kind of thing we should be doing as a community.”

Just over half of the apartments, 29, include rental subsidies and onsite case management through the New York Department of Health funded Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative, and these residences are reserved for older adults who once faced homelessness or were without stable housing.

The remaining 28 apartments are affordable living spaces for seniors on fixed incomes with rents 50-60 percent of the area medium income.

O’Connor said facilities like Silver Gardens are making life better for those who have or are priced out of other housing options while living on fixed incomes.
