WHITE PLAINS – Westchester County residents and business owners that use private wells for drinking water, may now apply for free PFAS testing through a state pilot program.
County Executive Ken Jenkins said protecting the health of residents is a top priority and this program gives residents one of the tools to understand the quality of their water.
“First it was with the plume that was around the county airport, and there are millions of dollars of cleanup that needs to be done. We had to do some additional things around the county airports. And now we realize that it’s in everything that we have, and it’s a forever chemical. It doesn’t go away; it will be 20,000 years before they disappear,” he said.
County Board of Legislators Chairman Vedat Gashi said for many county residents, a private well is their only source of drinking water and this program “closes that gap by testing for PFAS helping cover the cost of treatment. Now they can be sure that their drinking water is clean and safe.”
