MONTICELLO – “One of the victims in the car is going to die today.”
That was Sullivan County Coroner Alan Kesten speaking at a mock fatal accident set up at the high school. The school, in partnership with local emergency agencies, conducted an annual simulation to educate students on the dangers of impaired and distracted driving. These events feature police, firefighters, and EMS staging a realistic rescue and accident scene, often involving students as participants. The Life Net helicopter was there demonstrating a medevac. Kesten explains.
“We always do it this time of year, right before the senior prom. For us, it’s training, but, you know, for them, it’s raising awareness.”
He says. They have been doing this every year for 25 years to save lives.
“If we avoid one severe accident, if we avoid one fatality, we’ve done our job.”
