MIDDLETOWN – It is costing Middletown $800,000 a year to hire Empress EMS to provide ambulance service to the city.

Middletown is not alone. Other cities including Poughkeepsie and Newburgh also pay for ambulance services.

Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano would like to explore bringing the service in-house.

“Looking ahead for Middletown and exploring options including the possibility of EMS services into the fire or police service should be on the table moving forward,” he said. “I am requesting the common council work with me and our police and fire unions to explore our options for our city possibly bringing this service in-house.”

Two years ago, the City of Kingston moved its advanced life support ambulance service in-house utilizing the training and services of its paid firefighters.
