MID-HUDSON – For National Rebuilding Month, Valley (RTHV) joined affiliates nationwide, bringing together thousands of community volunteers, to provide critical home repairs and modifications for income-qualified homeowners, including senior citizens, veterans, persons with disabilities, and families in need.
This past Saturday was National Rebuilding Day 2026, and three local Mid-Hudson Valley homeowners received home repairs and/or accessibility modifications at no cost to them with the support of approximately 60 volunteers from local organizations and businesses, and the generous donation of in-kind materials and services from local businesses.
Rebuilding Together Hudson Valley provided critical home repairs for three projects on Saturday:
- A couple in their 70s who have lived in their Town of Plattekill home for 41 years. The husband is an Army National Guard veteran. Repairs included roof and gutter repairs to effectively direct rainwater away from the home, electrical, weatherization, accessibility modification to the bathtub and toilet, including grab bars, ensuring there is proper safe ingress and egress to the home, including installing side windows in the front portico, stabilizing decks, and repairing stairs, replacing water-stained sheetrock, painting, and numerous safety upgrades. These repairs and modifications will allow them to safely age in place and remain in the home they love.
- A 76-year-old woman who has lived in her Town of Pleasant Valley home for 36 years received repairs for her home including accessibility modifications to the bathtub, window replacement to insure they open effectively, close and lock securely and seal well, addressing hot water heater issues and addressing health and safety items, such as durable flooring, installing railings, repair flooring, as well as various safety upgrades.
- An 81-year-old woman who is the original owner of her Town of Clinton home for the past 31 years received repairs including window replacement, electrical upgrades, safety modifications including installation of outside motion light, repairing windows, the chimney flu, siding, and back deck.
Rebuilding Together Hudson Valley is a local affiliate of the national nonprofit organization Rebuilding Together, with a mission to repair the homes of neighbors in need and revitalize communities in Dutchess and Ulster County. Each year, Rebuilding Together affiliates and nearly 100,000 volunteers complete about 10,000 rebuild projects nationwide. All year long, they actively engaged in outreach and projects underway in both counties.
RTHV Executive Director Joe Ciardimet spoke with Mid-Hudson News on Saturday, saying, “Today was incredibly meaningful. Our volunteers came together to complete critical repairs that allow homeowners to stay safe and independent in the homes they have built their lives in.” Ciardi also shared his thanks for the volunteers and sponsors, saying, “We saw firsthand how even small repairs can restore dignity and stability. It was a powerful reminder that when a community shows up together, we’re not just fixing houses – we’re rebuilding lives.”
