Cory Matthews

CARMEL – A Town of Kent resident is facing a lengthy state prison term for allegedly possessing and distributing child sexual abuse materials through social media and electronic communications.

The Putnam Sheriff’s Department reported the arrest Monday of 38-year-old Cory Matthews on numerous felony charges.

Sheriff Brian Hess said his office was tipped off earlier this month that Matthews was in the possession of child sexual abuse materials. “Our investigators executed a search warrant at Matthews’ home and during the investigation the suspect was found to be in the possession of an illegal firearm and a high capacity magazine,” said Hess.

The sheriff said further investigation by members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation revealed more evidence leading to additional felony sex crime charges.

Matthews was taken into custody and following arraignment on charges of  predatory sexual assault against a child; rape; incest; use of a child in a sexual performance; promoting a sexual performance by a child; possessing a sexual performance by a child; criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon, he was remanded to the Putnam Correctional Facility without bail.

Carmel and Kent Police Departments assisted during this investigation.

“Sex crimes committed against children are among the most heinous crimes we encounter. I commend our Bureau of Criminal Investigations for their swift and thorough work in bringing this individual into custody,” said the sheriff.
