POUGHKEEPSIE – The Poughkeepsie Common Council last week heard from residents concerned about regulations governing housing and short-term rentals. Several attendees criticized current requirements for obtaining permission to offer short-term rental agreements, calling them overly restrictive.

Residents told council members the regulations make it difficult to legally rent out property, with several arguing the rules are too stringent.

“Income from our short-term rental has been essential in helping us remain in our home and continue to care for it,” one attendee said. “A one-size-fits-all policy definitely risks penalizing those who are contributing positively to the community, while doing little to address larger concerns of affordability and limited housing.”

Other speakers warned that extensive restrictions and bureaucracy could drive out local landlords, leaving tenants to deal with large, out-of-town corporations.

“As a local landlord, a community person, I think people like me are going to give it up and say, let me sell to some real estate investment trust stationed in New Jersey or California,” another attendee said. “And if people like us swap out… You get unnamed corporations that don’t care. It’s not good for the community at all.”
