CARMEL- Participants in Putnam County’s Ultra-Marathon will be up early Sunday, celebrating the 250th anniversary of Sybil Ludington’s legendary Revolutionary War ride.

The 50K is celebrating its 42nd edition, hosted by Putnam County along with the Taconic Road Runners.

The race commemorates the 16-year-old Sybil who, according to legend, rode some 35 miles in 1777 to alert American militiamen that the British were burning Danbury.

Sunday’s race covers 50 kilometers or some 31 miles following a course that retraces much of Ludington’s historic route including country and dirt roads.

The race starts south of the Hamlet of Carmel and concludes at the Putnam Veterans Hall on Route 52 in Carmel Hamlet.

Ultra-marathon organizers have described the race as “challenging” since participants will be running at elevations varying between 2,500 and 7,500 feet.

The race commences at 7:00 a.m.
