LIBERTY – Two Village of Liberty men have been arrested following a weeklong investigation into a series of vehicle break-ins and thefts, police said.
Adam Awny, 42, and Paul Ellis, 39, are accused of targeting parked cars overnight, taking various items and using stolen credit and debit cards at local businesses, according to the Liberty Police Department.
Police Chief Steven D’Agata said the arrests followed numerous complaints from residents whose vehicles had been entered and rummaged through during the overnight hours.
Awny was arrested on Chestnut Street after officers said he attempted to conceal stolen property. Police recovered some items, including jewelry and clothing. He was charged with multiple felonies, including criminal possession of stolen property, grand larceny, and tampering with physical evidence, as well as misdemeanor petit larceny.
Ellis was arrested after officers on foot patrol spotted him in the Main Street area. Police said he fled on foot before being apprehended after a brief chase. He faces felony charges, including criminal possession of stolen property and grand larceny.
Both men were arraigned in Town of Liberty Court and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail pending further court proceedings.
