VALHALLA – A member of the Lewisboro Police Department burned last week when trying to rescue occupants of a home on fire in Cross River has been released from the Westchester Medical Center.
Officer Joseph Briggs was discharged from the Burn Unit at the medical center to applause and pats on the back from fellow officers and members of hospital staff described as a “clapout” after being treated for what were described as “severe burns.” He is continuing recuperation at home.
The fire a week ago Thursday on Old Shop Road was fought by firefighters from throughout the region.
After receiving reports of individuals trapped, Officer Briggs and a colleague went into the blaze.
While inside, the officers met a sudden flashover, leaving both injured. While one officer was treated and released the same day, Briggs remained in the hospital in critical condition.
A spokesperson for the medical center praised Briggs: “His actions reflect the selflessness and bravery that define true public service.”
Lewisboro Police also expressed gratitude for the care Briggs received, saying he “came a long way” during his time in the hospital: “We thank the staff for their support throughout his recovery.”
Ninety-three-year-old Noel Rae perished in the blaze as did a still unidentified second person.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
