ALBANY – Most people think the New York State Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is designed only to pay heating bills during the winter. But did you know that it also provides free air conditioners for qualified families to beat the heat in the summer? Sullivan County Communications Director Dan Hust said now is the time to apply.
“This gives you a free air conditioner and not only gives it to you, but you actually get it installed as well. And the only way that doesn’t happen is if an air conditioner can’t be safely installed, a fan will be offered.”
He says certain income thresholds must be met to qualify, but there are several other ways to take advantage of this program.
“If a person in your household has a documented medical condition that’s exacerbated by extreme heat, meaning when they get hot, there’s a real medical issue that could go on there,” he said. “I encourage everyone, actually, to reach out to (your local HEAP office) or call our HEAP office in Sullivan County at 845-807-0142.”
