BLOOMINGBURG – With an active construction season ahead, motorists are urged to slow down and obey speed limits.
Last year’s Automated Speed Enforcement Program, or cameras, issued over 8,400 violations in the region, proving that while infrastructure is being upgraded, safety remains the top priority.
Regional State Transportation Director Julianne Fuda says highway workers have a dangerous job. “We have had 59 members of the New York State DOT family who have died on the job across New York State.”
There’s no reason for anything like that to happen, she said. “It’s 100 percent preventable if we have our motorists slow down and pay attention through the work zones; we won’t ever have to see that number increase.”
You’ve probably noticed them at the beginning of work zones. They are large trucks with a yellow impact pad on the back.
“We had private motorists who had run into the back of the attenuator trucks, and the equipment absorbed all of the energy, and we were able to save the lives of the workers,” Fuda said. “So please, when you are out on our roads, slow down and pay attention.”
