PUTNAM COUNTY- Eighty-four percent of teens who drink report that finding free alcohol is as easy as ordering pizza, and the Prevention Council of Putnam started the Sticker Shock campaign to raise awareness and prevent youth from accessing alcohol.

Sheila Hanley, Coalition Coordinator, described the initiative as a “community-driven effort to remind adults about the consequences of providing alcohol to minors.  Stores that joined the initiative featured striking stickers with impactful messages on their pizza boxes.  The stickers highlighted the legal and social consequences of underage drinking and emphasized the importance of keeping alcohol out of the hands of youth.

Kristin McConnell, Executive Director of the Prevention Council of Putnam, noted that “every year, underage drinking leads to tragic consequences, including car crashes, health issues, and even fatalities.  By reducing youth access to alcohol, we can protect young lives and reduce risky behaviors as well as strengthening community awareness of the law and the dangers of underage drinking while at the same time fostering a culture of accountability and prevention.”

Twenty-two pizzerias throughout the county from Carmel to Cold Spring joined in the program by agreeing to have stickers placed on pizza boxes.
