TOWN OF WALLKILL – The Town of Wallkill is facing “a significant budgetary shortfall” due to “years of fiscal mismanagement,” Democratic Town Supervisor Frank DenDanto III said.
Therefore, he is asking the state to bail out the town with an immediate $4 million shot in the arm.
“My hope is with this solution from the state that the property tax increase will stay below the cap. That said, if the state doesn’t come to the table with any kind of relief or help in any way, then obviously we will have to rethink what that means for the tax base,” he said.
If there is no emergency state aid, DenDanto said town taxes could increase in 2027 by “well over 70 percent.”
State Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) and Assemblywoman Paula Kay (D, Rock Hill), both of whom represent Wallkill, said they received the request and “legislative staff are analyzing the town’s financial circumstances.” Skoufis added that “the timing of the request should not be an impediment given still-ongoing budget negotiations.”
DenDanto has already cut police and DPW budgets for 2026 by 20 percent, including leaving four police officer positions vacant.
