NEW WINDSOR – A Brooklyn man has been arrested by New Windsor Police after he allegedly called a local elderly man, claiming to be a representative of “Apple” and demanding $30,000 for unauthorized charges.
The call came from a 202 Washington, DC area code.
The man realized it was a scam and notified New Windsor Police who conducted a meeting with the suspect and when Wenxi Wang, 46, showed up, he was arrested and charged with felony attempted grand larceny.
He was processed and issued an appearance ticket returnable to New Windsor Town Court.
“In today’s world, it is more important than ever to remain vigilant and aware of the many scams targeting our communities, especially our seniors, who too often are the victims of these calculated and devastating crimes,” said Town Supervisor Stephen Bedetti. “We have seen far too many cases where elderly individuals have lost their life savings to fraudsters who prey on trust and fear.”
