NEWBURGH – As the Newburgh City Council discusses a procedure to form a charter review commission, some members are expressing their opinions at the city manager form of governing has not worked for the benefit of city residents.
Councilwoman Giselle Martinez says she will support what is best for the people of the city.
“What we all know is whatever is happening in Newburgh right now is not working. People might not know the language, the jargon, but they know something is wrong and they know it has to change in order for the people to get the most out of their local government. And that is what we are supporting.”
Some council members believe the city manager has too much power. In the case of the just resigned manager, he kept a tight lid on information dissemination including barring the media from talking to any department heads and during his entire tenure, refused to talk to the media, thus limiting what the general public was privy to.
