YONKERS – A 14-year-old Yonkers boy has been arrested by police and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment for allegedly making and detonating homemade explosive devices.

The boy, whose name is being withheld because of his age, will be adjudicated in Westchester Family Court.

The boy’s arrest followed reports of fireworks being discharged in the area of Bregano Park in the evening of April 16. None were found.

The following morning, Yonkers Police discovered a heavily damaged portable toilet in the park.

On April 9, police went to a suspect’s home and recovered materials used to manufacture explosives.

The youth admitted to constructing the device used in the incident and to being responsible for several other explosions in the area in the last several weeks.

“Improvised explosive devices pose a significant danger to the public, regardless of who constructs them or their intent,” sand Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza. “We urge parents, guardians, and neighbors to remain vigilant and aware of potentially dangerous behavior, and to report concerns before they escalate into something far more serious.”
