MONROE – Tim Mitts announced on Monday that he is dropping out of the New York State Senate race in District 42 against James Skoufis (D, Cornwall).
Mitts, who was running as a Conservative, said that he has chosen to “serve his community through his business leadership and civic involvement.” He added that his decision came “after careful reflection on the responsibilities that come with public leadership and his personal commitment to maintaining the highest moral and ethical standards.”
Christopher Kasker filed petitions with the Board of Elections on Friday to run against Skoufis on the Republican and Conservative lines. Kasker, of Tuxedo, is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant.
Skoufis easily defeated Republican Dorey Houle by a margin of approximately 73,420 votes compared to 54,614 in the 2024 Senate race. Mitts ran as a Conservative, receiving about 6,694 votes. Mitts defeated Houle in the Conservative primary in June of that year.
A significant number of Mitts’ votes in the Conservative primary came from residents in the Town of Palm Tree. He was criticized by Orange County Conservative leadership for changing his party affiliation from Republican to Conservative on February 14th of 2024. Mitts was not endorsed by the Conservative party again this year.
District 42 covers nearly all of Orange County, including all of the southern and western portions of the county.
“My commitment to helping people, supporting responsible development, and strengthening our communities will continue,” Mitts said. “Public service does not begin or end with holding office.”
