KINGSTON – The Ulster County Legislature is going to codify a longstanding executive order governing interactions with federal immigration officials into permanent legislative policy.

“This is about something simple: protecting constitutional rights and making sure our county government operates with clarity and consistency,” said Legislature Chairman Peter Criswell.

Key provisions of the resolution include a judicial warrant requirement, limits on information sharing, no use of county property as staging areas, clear staff protocols, and public education.

The resolution affirms that the county sheriff is an independent constitutional officer. It does not apply to the county jail or to facilities and areas under the sheriff’s exclusive operational control.

The resolution does not obstruct or impede lawful federal law enforcement activity. It does not prevent federal authorities from carrying out their duties. It does not direct, limit, or interfere with the sheriff’s lawful authority or operations. And it applies only to county employees and county-controlled property.
