PORT JERVIS – Police in the City of Port Jervis will be participating in the “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign from April 9-13.
It is part of National Distracted Driver Awareness Month in April.
Port Jervis Police Chief Bill Worden said the distracted driver awareness campaign is aimed at keeping motorists and everyone else safe.
“We are going to be using overtime funding that is provided by a grant called ‘the police traffic services grant’ from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee to help finance extra patrols that will be deployed in targeted areas looking for motorists that are in violation of driving with their cell phone in their hands, texting while driving, engaged in any type of distracted behavior,” he said.
Distracted driving in 2024 has contributed to 49,550 crashes and 105 fatal incidents in New York State.
