GOLDENS BRIDGE- Authorities have called it a miracle that a motorist who fell asleep while driving northbound on Route 684 near the Putnam-Westchester County line did not cause a crash resulting in serious injury or even worse.
The bizarre series of events occurred when Goldens Bridge Fire Department Chief Robert Melillo was on the interstate. A motorist flagged down the fire official advising a Honda also headed northbound was traveling slowly while weaving in and out of the driving lane.
Melillo notified the county’s dispatch center requesting an immediate response from State Police. The chief located the slow moving vehicle and activated his car’s lights and siren and when peering inside, he observed a woman slumped across the wheel with her face pressed against the window.
About a mile from the county line the Honda struck a rumble strip along the shoulder of the road and came to a stop. The chief ran to the vehicle, turned off its engine and checked the driver as troopers arrived.
The unidentified driver was examined at the scene refusing medical attention advising responders that she was extremely tired and nodded off.
Police called it a miracle that no one was injured since authorities said the Honda had been driving itself for a six-mile journey along the busy highway.
