ALBANY – The effort to cap gasoline sales tax during the escalating prices at the pump has now reached the state level as Senator Michelle Hinchey (D, Saugerties) has drafted a letter, co-signed by 14 other lawmakers, to cap the four percent tax at a $3 purchase.
“Trump’s war in Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz and sent gas prices skyrocketing, hurting average Americans,” the lawmaker said.
“When we have the federal government failing to actually make life more affordable, me and many of my colleagues believe that we have a responsibility to do everything that we can at the state level to help,” she said. “Even though this is driven by federal action, we need to do whatever we can to actually make it affordable for people to get to work, to get to a doctor’s appointment, to go to our small businesses across the Hudson Valley.”
Hinchey said in 2022, the state capped the gas tax. Combined with county tax caps, she said it could provide meaningful relief to the motorist.
