MID-HUDSON — Trout fishing season opens today( Wednesday) across New York, drawing thousands of anglers to creeks, streams, ponds, and lakes statewide despite chilly spring weather. Many are hoping to land elusive brook, brown or rainbow trout during the annual event.
One of the top destinations is Roscoe in Sullivan County, nicknamed “Trout Town USA” for its proximity to five renowned trout streams, including the Beaverkill, Willowemoc, and Neversink rivers. The town, located about two hours north of New York City, is a longtime favorite for both local and visiting anglers.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said it plans to stock 1.7 million brook, brown and rainbow trout in public waters this year. About 10 percent of those fish are longer than 12 inches — considered large for stock trout. State officials noted that drought conditions in recent months slowed brown trout production at the Catskill Fish Hatchery.
“This time of year is something many New Yorkers look forward to,” said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton, who encouraged anglers to introduce someone new to the sport. Her comments are part of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s “Get Offline, Get Outdoors” initiative, which promotes outdoor activities as an alternative to screen time. The state offers a number of programs designed to get residents interested in fishing.
