POUGHKEEPSIE – The Fairview Fire District honored several members for heroic actions and dedicated service at a recent awards dinner, where officials also discussed plans for the future.

Chief Justin Bohlman and Deputy Chief Robert Ridley presented awards during the event that included guests from Dutchess County Emergency Response as well as state and local elected officials.

District Commissioner Art Grace said Fairview completed significant infrastructure improvements at its Violet Avenue firehouse over the past year, including a new roof and a renovated kitchen for firefighters who live at the station full time. He added that firefighters now respond to about 2,600 calls annually, up 1,000 from a decade ago. The career department is supported by four volunteer EMTs, six volunteer exterior firefighters and two volunteer interior firefighters.

A new fire engine is expected to arrive within six months.

Board of Commissioners Chairman Andrew Calamari is stepping down after 13 years. Bohlman praised Calamari, saying he “laid the foundation for everything we are achieving today.” Former Poughkeepsie Town Councilman Mike Ciffone was appointed to fill the vacancy created by Calamari’s departure.

Firefighter Tyler Hilwein was named Firefighter of the Year for 2025. Bohlman described Hilwein as “dependable” and someone who “quietly gets things done.”

Attendees also viewed a video compiled by Firefighter Tyler Mendelson, a Marine Corps veteran who studied film in college before joining the district, offering an inside look at the life of a firefighter.
