YORKTOWN- An electrical fire in a utility room at the Country House Assisted Living Facility in Yorktown forced the evacuation of 80 residents to temporary shelters and offsite facilities.

Yorktown Fire Department personnel were summoned around 3:45 p.m. to the sprawling center on Baldwin Road.  After firefighters isolated power to the utility area, NYSEG crews secured power to the entire complex.

Residents in the affected wing were evacuated while the remainder of the facility sheltered in place. Officials said ventilation, atmospheric metering and secondary searches were completed without incident.

Emergency responders assisted patients at the facility

The Yorktown Building Department determined the facility could not be occupied until repairs were completed and inspected resulting in police establishing a “Unified Command Post” to relocate the 80 residents.

With the assistance of emergency responders from Putnam and throughout Westchester, 56 occupants were safely moved offsite including one patient taken to an area hospital for treatment following a fall.

Bee Line buses, ambulances, ambulettes, and family members assisted with the transports of patients off campus.
