BREWSTER – A woman was treated at Danbury Hospital for burns after attempting to extinguish a fire in her Brewster home but quick action on the part of a neighbor and members of the Brewster and Carmel Fire Departments, saved the 156-year-old three bed room, two story wood-frame building.

Nine-one-one calls reporting a house fire at 29 Center Street alerted emergency responders to the mid-afternoon blaze Thursday.

When Brewster Police arrived moments later and confirmed a working fire, a general alarm was sounded for emergency personnel.

Brewster Assistant Fire Chief Dan Rubin said the fire started in the kitchen and the woman of the house, who was not identified, attempted unsuccessfully to extinguish it suffering from burns in the process.

The chief credited a neighbor who saw the smoke and heard the woman’s cries for help, ran over to the burning building and knocked down the fire until crews arrived and extinguished the flames with a hose.

Fire damage was contained to the kitchen of the residence.

The Putnam County Fire Investigation Team determined the blaze began on the stove top and spread.

No injuries were reported to firefighting personnel.

Also assisting were members of the Brewster EMS Squad.
