NEW WINDSOR – One-third of the 39-acre property owned by the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Inc. will protect the Brown’s Pond watershed in perpetuity now that a conservation easement has been acquired.
Orange County Land Trust Executive Director Jim Delaune said the arrangement speaks to the dedication to the community and greater good of the order.
“Brown’s Pond has a watershed, so all the water collected in that watershed goes into Brown’s Pond. Brown’s Pond is part of the City of Newburgh’s system for drinking water. The 13 acres are adjacent to Brown’s Pond. The more land you can protect around the pond, the cleaner the water is,” Delaune said.
The easement is comprised of forested land and will remain in its native vegetative state to continue to act as a filter for potential pollutants.
