GOSHEN – The jury in the trial of alleged DoorDash shooter John Reilly III began deliberating in Orange County Court on Tuesday without reaching a verdict.
After receiving instructions from Orange County Court Judge Craig Brown, the 12-person panel began deliberating at approximately 11:10 a.m. The jury sent Judge Brown one note, at about 3:40 p.m., which read: “Could we please received the elements for each charge in writing. Or, in turn, name the first charge and elements read back to us. In addition, the re-explanation of justification either written or told to us.”
Judge Brown explained to the jurors that he could not provide the charges in writing, but he read them to them in open court.
“(The jury) is really examining the evidence,” Reilly’s attorney Thomas Kenniff said. “We always felt from the beginning that if we had a jury who was really looking to examine all the evidence in the case, all the testimony in the case, and not just be blinded by a 30, 40-second video clip, that we would have a very good chance of getting an acquittal in this case. We think the evidence for justification in this case is compelling, overwhelming actually.”
Reilly, 48, the Town of Chester’s Highway Superintendent, is accused of shooting DoorDash delivery driver Alpha Barry on May 2, 2025. Barry arrived at Reilly’s home on Valerie Drive in the Town of Chester after he became lost when his cell phone died. Barry, 24, filed a civil lawsuit against Reilly and the Town Chester last November.
Reilly faces attempted murder charges, which carry a maximum sentence of 25 years, for the shooting. He was also charged with two counts of assault and eight counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
Deliberations in the case resume on Wednesday.
