BREWSTER- Charles Erickson answered the call for 68 years as a member of the Brewster Fire Department.
Family, friends, and fellow firefighters will pay their respects Monday to the former captain and life member of Putnam’s busiest fire department at a funeral service to be held at the Beecher Funeral Home in Brewster.
Erickson, who joined the fire service in 1957, died Wednesday.
Lou Gasparini, who recently lost his father, another life long member of the Brewster FD, remembered Erickson as a “giant of the fire service. At my dad’s wake, he told me: ‘I’m probably next!’ He was a hero and dedicated public servant, Thanks for your service Charlie.”
In 1969, during a fire at the Trinity Pawling School, Erickson was involved in the rescue of a firefighter who became trapped above the fire on an upper floor of the sprawling facility with the department’s new snorkel truck which saved the man’s life.
