CARMEL- Nine-one-one calls reporting flames coming from the vicinity of the Putnam Golf Course sent members of the Carmel Police and Mahopac Falls Fire Department to the scene off Hill Street Friday, and when first responders arrived and confirmed a fully engulfed maintenance building located at the rear of the facility’s main clubhouse, mutual aid was summoned from surrounding agencies.
The time was 2 a.m. when Putnam’s 9-1-1 Dispatch Center began receiving reports of flames shooting high into the early morning skies.
Upon arrival, Mahopac Falls Fire Department Chief Chris Tompkins requested assistance from neighboring departments since fire conditions were intensified by the presence of two 1,000-pound propane tanks, both of which became compromised during the incident.
Firefighters established a water supply from a nearby hydrant on Bullet Hole Road and initiated an aggressive exterior fire attack. Due to the involvement of propane and the potential for further hazards, additional resources were requested, including the Mahopac, Carmel, Kent, and Putnam Valley Fire Departments in addition to the Putnam County Hazardous Materials Team, Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, an Empress Paramedic, Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services, and Putnam Sheriff’s Department.
A crew from NYSEG also responded to address downed and live electrical wires and to secure power to the area.
Chief Tompkins noted: “Coordination between fire suppression crews and utility personnel was critical to ensure safe operations.”
During the incident, members of the Mohegan Fire Department, Yorktown Fire Department, and Croton Falls Fire Department provided standby coverage to ensure continued protection for surrounding communities.
Firefighters worked for several hours to bring the fire under control and extinguish remaining hotspots. An excavator was utilized to assist with overhaul operations, allowing crews to safely access and extinguish the deep-seated fire.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
